My Journey as an Entrepreneur

Report Plus – A Lightweight Student Management System

Quick Overview
Report Plus is a lightweight, Android-based student management system that has organically grown to over 16,000 installs and 1,000+ monthly active users, all without any marketing. The app follows a freemium model and is still live on the Google Play Store. As of June 20, I’ve officially stopped supporting and updating the app — but the journey behind it shaped a huge part of who I am today.

💡 How It All Started

It began as a simple classroom request. My computer science teacher asked me to build a tool for managing student grades — initially envisioning an Excel-like system. Instead, I started developing a full-fledged Android app tailored to my school’s needs, allowing staff to upload and manage student marks digitally.

What started as a school project quickly turned into something more. After a few updates and improvements, the school decided to move to an enterprise-level solution — making my app redundant for them. But I saw potential elsewhere.

🌍 Scaling to the World — One Download at a Time

I realized that in many emerging countries, high-end student management systems are either too expensive or simply inaccessible. That gap is where Report Plus could make a real difference.

In July 2021, during the COVID lockdown, I released the first public version of the app on the Google Play Store(Apple’s developer fee was too steep at the time). Without any ads or marketing, the app began gaining traction — particularly in African countries, just as I had hoped. Teachers and institutions began reaching out with feature requests and feedback.

💰 From Free to Freemium — and Giving Back

Initially, the app was completely free. But as demand grew, I switched to a freemium model — allowing institutions to use the core features for free, and unlock additional benefits through a paid plan.

However, I soon realized that many schools, especially in low-income regions, couldn’t afford even the minimal pricing. That’s when I launched the Empowerment Program for African Schools, which gave full premium access to qualifying institutions at no cost.

This decision wasn’t about revenue — it was about impact. I’ve always believed in building with purpose and placing value over profit, and this experience solidified that belief.

🛠 Lessons, Growth & What’s Next

Over time, as I pursued higher education, my priorities shifted. I stopped actively developing the app, but continued supporting users and monitoring feedback where possible. The entire app was built with just Rs. 2,500 — spent on a Google Play developer account. Everything else was driven by passion, long nights, and a lot of trial and error.

The journey taught me real-world product thinking, user empathy, lean development, and how meaningful technology can be when built with purpose.

🔮 The Vision Ahead

Now, I’m working with a friend to reimagine Report Plus as a modern, web-first, multi-tenant platform — designed from the ground up for scalability and impact.

But this time, it’s bigger than just student records.

I’m planning to redesign learning itself, by integrating AI-driven insights, modern learning techniques, and smarter tools to make education more personalized, accessible, and engaging — especially in regions that need it the most.

With this next phase of Report Plus, the goal is clear:

To revolutionize how we learn — one classroom at a time.
